Parents Health Testing

Cratel Parents Health Testing

You should never purchase a crossbred pup without health testing on the parents. Take a look below at our extensive testing below.

We carry out all the recommended health testing as suggested for the specific breed (American Kennel Club). Please note there are different health testing requirements for the different types of Beagles. So this is why you will read that some tests are done by some breeders and not others, it all depends on what type of beagle they breed from.  Although we do hip score our beagles it is not a requirement from the American Kennel Club for beagle assured breeders to do beagle breeding.

Cratel health testing is as below. We only breed from the champions breed. A beagle has a different set of health testing requirements, you can see the health testing for our beagle under Our Dogs section, all our Dads are on this page.

We have bred our Beagles Mums ourselves, so we know the lines well.

PRA Clear – not just by DNA but each individual dog has been tested with a certificate, please note only one of the parents needs to be clear for the pups NOT to be affected. So information sites which say both parents are incorrect information.You can view this here.

BVA Eye Tested – BVA eye tests check for cataracts and other common eye issues.

Mums/Pups Heart Testing – We regular heart test all our Mums. and most importantly our pups have two full health checks and any heart murmurs are picked up well before they leave us too. A pup can still have a heart murmur if both parents are completely fine. So checking both is crucial. Our records of our Mums tested are kept on site and signed by our vet.

FN Testing – Any Beagle that is under the age of 2, and has a litter is FN tested. This testing is only required on a spaniel under the age of 2, if no symptoms have presented itself by this age the Beagle will not suffer from FN. You will see this below where it says unlikely to be alive at reproduction age.

All our Champion Beagle Dads are FN tested and clear.

All our Beagles are hip scored, with an excellent low score. The lower the result the better, it is scored out of 106. If you are showing or breeding Beagles AKC Club recommend a mean score 10/11 out of 106, which is extremely low, this is for beagle to beagle AKC show breeding, our current beagle sires range from 5 through to 15, which is out of 106. If we ever have a sire with a too high hip score, it does not become one of our main studs. To view the average hip scores of all breeds see below.

Results using the FN test:

N= Homozygous Normal/Clear

Can be bred to any dog. Will never produce affected pups. Will never develop FN

C= Heterozygous/Carrier

Should be bred to Normal partners to remove the risk of producing affected – Will never develop FN

A= Homozygous Mutant

Affected Shouldn’t be bred. Unlikely to be alive at reproductive age. Will develop/has FN

For All Our Beagle needs different health testing than the Beagle, this is all completed and below.

*Degenerative Myelopathy tested and clear

*Neonatal Encephalopathy tested and clear

*Malignant Hyperthermia tested and clear

The beauty of a hybrid dog is when you cross two pedigree dogs, you can/may limit/remove the common health problems commonly seen in a pedigree.
